Having lived most of her life near the area, the Great Smoky Mountains became a natural setting for the artist in this latest print.
Her daughter, Holly is the model, and her friend is "DS Double Clutch", a spotted saddle horse owned by David and Suzanne Jernigan.

"Pride of the Cherokees"

Sharon Gamble was the model for this portrait of a Cherokee mother and her young child. The Cherokees carried their babies in a simple bundle that was attached to the mother with a criss-cross effect in her front and tied around at the bottom of her back, which would form a sack-like carrier for the baby. The baby would usually ride looking over the mother's shoulder, facing the same direction as her. There is a suggestion of the Rhododendron in bloom, which is common to the North Carolina mountains, home of the Cherokees.

"Cherokee Memories"

Located in the Cherokee National Forest, Bald River Falls was used as a backdrop for this painting of the way life might have been when the Cherokee Indians roamed freely in this area, which is now known as Monroe County, TN.
"Clutch's New Image", a spotted saddle horse, owned by David and Suzanne Jerigan, was the only model used in this painting.

"Shawna"

Shawna Evans was the model for this portrait of an Indian maiden. She is of Cherokee descent and grew up around the area where the Tellico River meets the Little Tennessee River near Chota and Ft. Loudoun, which holds a lot of Cherokee history. The earrings are of Cherokee design and were made by Navajo artist Ethel Johnson.

"American Horse"

Oglala Sioux Chief, great warrior, orator and diplomat, American Horse represented his people in Washington, DC many times and later toured with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. While trapped in a cave, he received fatal wounds from a military detachment led by Captain Mills.

"Chief Joseph"

Chief of the Nez Perce Tribe of Oregon. "I will fight no more forever" were the famous words of Joseph when he surrendered to army soldiers only 40 miles from the Canadian border and sanctuary. He led 750 of his people in a 1300 mile retreat, brilliantly defeating the U.S. Army in 7 major battles before his surrender. An advocate of peace and an eloquent speaker, Joseph was acclaimed as a military genius. His strategy tactics were adapted for use in training at West Point. He died in 1904 from a broken heart.

"Sitting Bull"

Chief of the Sioux Tribe. As medicine man, Sitting Bull brought together the Arapahoes, Cheyenes and Sioux to fight against Custer and his army at the Little Big Horn. Although credited for the defeat of General Custer, he was not at the battle and actually didn't even fight!
